Pacific Midnight by michaelanderson Pacific Midnight by michaelanderson

A sky filled with stars and the half light of the moon make for an enchanted night on the lost coast of Tutuila, American Samoa. I took this 2 nights before the big Tsunami.

This is a blend of 2 exposures, one for the stop action motion of the blowhole and one for the stars. A bright 3/4 moon was positioned behind me, giving perfect illumination to the foreground scene but still allowing the stars in the background to show themselves.

It all had to come together perfectly to get this shot: A big swell at High tide well after dark with a bright moon behind me to illuminate the foreground, no wind in the palms and and no clouds to obscure the stars. And yes, this is the rainy South Pacific so getting all of those elements together happens only a few times a year! I felt extremely lucky to get this shot!

VIEW LARGE to see the stars.

Amazing, bud. Gorgeous. It's like Neverland or something. I half expect a pirate ship to be floating off the coast and a group of children to be flying over head.

A brilliant shot. The foreground has a staggering amount of detail and the composition is great. It almost looks painted.

Including the stars in the sky overhead is an inspired choice - otherwise the sky might have been a touch...dull.

I looked at this last night a little while before I went to bed, and I'm pretty sure it influenced one of my dream's setting. So thank you for making my dream a beautiful place and giving me a little stress relief! It really is an amazing photo.

I don't suppose I've ever notice where the stars show over the clouds..... We do lots of trips to the Carribean and I've never seen the sky where the stars aren't actually blocked when the clouds are still noticeable enough to be caught like that on film....
Ocean is really nice though.

Nice pick up! That's right where the blend line is. It's 50% of the fast exposure (first image) blended with 50% of the second one (longer exposure) where the stars were brighter and the clouds had disappeared by then. This is taking the elements of both images right there on the blend line so you see stars superimposed on the clouds. But a straight shot using film or my 2009 camera would not show reality as well as this blend does- the technology is still not there. The dynamic range is too great and our eyes see all of this detail in real time where film or a digital back needs extra time in low light to 'develop' the image on the sensor. Thanks for the comment!

I think its a nice shot, just wondering if the foreground can be lightened a little? I know its a night shot but it just makes it seem a little dull. Nobody can deny tho, the sky is perfect! Love the hint of light on the horizon too!
