The thin ice on the edge of a lake was broken and then piled up on the edges by a powerful wind leaving this mosaic of patterns in the stacked ice. It's a glacial lake which gives it a nice spectrum of green and blue.
I have witness happen before in nearby ponds and lakes during especially frigid winters. You did produce a photo that visually describes the feeling of these "especially frigid winters".
I agree with foureyes - this is somewhat different from your usual. It's interesting and well-executed, but not quite as impactful as some of your other work. Still, variety is the spice of photography as well as life!
